Introduction:
I went through the English 223, Migrant Literature class, taught by Dr. Karen-Laing Urbina.
I specifically chose the migrant literature class, rather than any other english class, because it is about Immigrants, a category I belong to myself. I moved from Cameroon (Africa) to las Vegas over three years ago in search of a better life. Having myself travelled the road of immigration, I am always intensely interested in the dynamics that surround the migration of people and their settlement in their adoptive country. In the beginning, the unconventional teaching style of Dr. Urbina, I call it Socratic, threw me out of balance for the first few weeks. But, eventually, I figured out what she was actually trying to accomplish. From that time, I fully immersed myself in migrant literature. I learnt a great deal from the course and grew as a person and community member.
